HandBrake Video Compression/Conversion Instructions

HandBrake is an open-source video conversion application, available for Mac OS X, Linux and Window. The program uses Libavcodec, a free and open-source library of codecs for encoding and decoding video. The same library of codec is used by the popular open source media player, VLC. Handbrake can be used to convert videos from one format to another or to compress videos to reduce their file size.

3.    Under the Destination heading, click Browse.

4.    Navigate to the folder where the converted/compressed video will be saved (e.g. The Desktop or the Videos folder.) Type a name for the output video in the File Name field, and use the drop menu to select between MP4 and MKV and then click Save .
a.  If your video file size exceeds 2GB (2024 MB), select the check box next to “Web Optimized” to compress the video.
*Please note: This option will shrink the converted video’s file size, but
may result in a noticeable loss of quality.

5.    Click Start. The status bar will say “Queue Finished” when the video(s) have been successfully converted.
