About this Guide

This guide demonstrates how to order captions through Kaltura MediaSpace.  These steps are the same across all caption-enabled Kaltura MediaSpace sites throughout the University of Cincinnati.  Please be aware that billing is based on which MediaSpace college through which the captions are requested.

Step 1: Access your video through Kaltura MediaSpace

  Navigate to the Kaltura MediaSpace.

Log in with your UC credentials by clicking the Guest button and selecting Login from the drop-down menu.

Select My Media from the Account drop-down menu (see below).

Select the playback view of your video by clicking the thumbnail or the title of the video.

Step 2: Open the “Order Captions” Menu

In the Playback view, click the “Actions” button and select “+Order Captions” from the drop-down menu.

Step 3: Select Options

  Enter the preferred options

o   Language, Fidelity, and Turnaround time may not be applicable to all videos.

  Standard options are the following:

          o   English
          o   Professional (99%)
          o   Standard (48 hours)
If a quicker turnaround time is required, contact the Multimedia Coordinator (see below).

In “Instructions & Notes” add in any course-specific jargon, terminology, or acronyms that are specific to the field of study.  This is not a required step.

You can also choose to check the boxes for “Request Foreign Language Translation”, “Add Speaker Names”, and “Quickly return lower-fidelity captions while selected fidelity is being processed”.

Step 4: Order Captions

  Click the “Order Captions” button.

Step 5: Notify the appropriate Caption Request Approver

a. If the caption request is for a student WITH an accommodation, send an email to vanceki@ucmail.uc.edu.

b. If the caption request is for a publicly facing or instructional video for a student WITHOUT an accommodation, send an email to your college’s video manager.  You can find your college’s video manager and their email in the table below.

Due to the cost of this service, captions are ordered and processed in a moderated fashion.  Our faculty and staff who have communicated with the Multimedia Coordinator will have their submitted requests approved.  Students must either contact the Disability Services Office (if an accommodation is required) or contact their instructor.  To see a list of available UC Kaltura MediaSpace sites, click HERE.

Step 6: Check your video for closed-captioning for 48 hours

In Playback view, select “CC” on your video’s player.

If there is no “CC” available on the player, captions are not yet ready for the video. If this is beyond the 48-hour period, please contact the DSO office.
