 Kaltura Frequently Asked Questions

 Frequently asked questions for the University's Kaltura video hosting service.

Q: What is Kaltura?
A: The Kaltura video server allows both instructors and students to create, upload, and publish video in your Blackboard courses.

Q: How can I access Kaltura?
A: It’s easy!  To begin, use your UC Central Login account to access Blackboard at canopy.uc.eduThen follow the guides to learn the basics of Kaltura.

Q: Who has access to record Kaltura videos?
A: All UC instructors and students have access to Kaltura, as long as it is enabled for the course.  Instructors, see “How to Turn on the Kaltura Tool” in the Troubleshooting Guide.

Q: Who has access to view my Kaltura videos?
A: While some administrators may be able to see your videos in the system, your students (or classmates and instructor) will only see your videos if you add them to a specific item via the Mashups tool in the Text Editor or if you add them to the Course Gallery (and check “Make this Item Public in Gallery”).

Q: Can I view Kaltura videos on my iPad or Android tablet?
A: Yes, any Kaltura videos posted to a course are viewable in the Bb Mobile Learn app, which is available in the App Store and Google Play. 

Q: What is the difference between Kaltura and Echo360?

A:

Use Echo360 for:

• Automatic lecture captures scheduled at the beginning of the term
• Official in-course content that you may want to keep from term to term
• Pre-recorded classroom lectures
• “In the field” lectures or interviews when you don’t have internet connectivity (personal capture)
• Any video for which you want to monitor views and understand where students are focusing/confused

Use Kaltura for:

• Quick videos that you may want to use to highlight a particular topic
• Videos that you may want to use in conjunction with the adaptive release functionality in Blackboard
• Mobile video uploads
• Videos that you download from Echo360 and to which you apply edits in another software program
• Videos that you want to keep in long-term storage
• Providing video feedback on assignments in Blackboard

Q: How do I record video from a webcam for Kaltura?
A: It’s easy!  See the Kaltura Webcam Recording guide.

Q: How do I deploy a video for my students (or classmates and instructor) to see in a Blackboard course?
A: It’s easy!  See the Embed Kaltura Media guide and/or the Manage Kaltura Media guide (for instructors).

Q: How do I record a PowerPoint presentation?
A: It’s easy!  See the Kaltura Screen Capture guide to record your voice and your screen as you cycle through the PPT presentation. 

Q: How do I upload a video that I already recorded?
A: It’s easy!  See the Kaltura Upload Media guide.  

Q: How do I request captioning?
A: Captioning, transcription, and interpretation services are available through the AESS Communication Access Team.

Q: How do I delete videos that I have uploaded to Kaltura?
A: Use your UC Central Login account to access Blackboard at canopy.uc.edu.  Select “My Media” from the menu on the left side of the screen.  Navigate to the video you wish to delete and then select “Delete Media” below the video.  Click OK to delete.

Q: Can I edit recorded videos in Kaltura?
A: At this time, there is not a way for instructors or students to edit Kaltura videos, but your college technical contact may be able to do this for you.

Q: What is the maximum file size I can upload to Kaltura?
A: There is currently a 2GB maximum file size, but your college technical contact may be able to upload it for you.  For more information, see the Upload Kaltura Media guide. 

Q: What file types can I upload?
A: You can upload virtually any video file (.flv, .asf, .qt, .mov, .mp4, .3gp, .rm, .m4v, .arf), as well as audio and image files.  For more information, see the Upload Kaltura Media guide.

Q: Can I download a Kaltura video to my computer to watch offline?
A: You cannot download another person’s Kaltura video at this time, but videos you record on your computer are automatically saved on your hard drive.  For more information, see the Troubleshooting Guide.

Q: Is there a maximum video duration?
A: When using Kaltura to record your screen, there is a maximum duration of two hours.

Q: How can I make my webcam video look or sound better?
